Four simple tips for attending a mass lobby

On Wednesday 9 July, thousands of people will take part in a mass lobby co-hosted by our partners at The Climate Coalition.

Supporters from over 100 organisations across the UK will gather in Westminster to urge MPs to take action on climate change, debt and nature.

If you are one of the thousands of CAFOD supporters who have joined in with previous mass lobbies, you will know how powerful these moments are and about the uniquely inspirational atmosphere generated on the day.

For those who haven’t attended a mass lobby before, this day will be a unique opportunity to join the Church’s global debt campaign and make our call for the cancellation of the debts of countries hit hardest by the climate crisis, loud and clear.

Here are a few simple tips from our Advocacy team to make the best of the day.

1. Invite your MP to attend

Together with our friends from the Climate Coalition, we are inviting every MP to this unique summer event. But we know that the chances of MPs joining us on that date are much higher if they know that residents from their own constituencies will be attending. Will you meet your MP at the mass lobby too? Don’t be shy about contacting them—your voice matters and MPs are more likely to engage when constituents reach out directly.

2. Get to know your MP

If you haven’t met your MP before, take some time to learn about their background, interests and priorities. You can use the website TheyWorkForYou as an easy tool to find who your MP is and learn their priorities. Understanding what drives them can help you tailor our message and build a stronger case for the cancellation of the debts of countries hit hardest by the climate crisis.

3. Frame the issue as a solution

One of the most effective advocacy strategies is to present an issue as part of the solution. People are more inclined to support something that feels achievable, practical and beneficial. Our latest report, The new debt crisis and its solutions, backs up our asks with clear evidence and will help you to shape your message in a way that captures your MP's attention.

4. Keep in touch with your MP

Meeting your MP is just the beginning. Be sure to follow up with them afterwards. Thank them for their time, recap your key points, and keep the conversation going. A thank you letter from you and other people from your parish, or a social media post (with photos, if possible), can reinforce our campaign ask and help to keep your MP engaged.
